| With winter weather in the forecast, it is important to remember to remove snow around any fire hydrants that are located on your property and clear snow from around any intake or exhaust vents for a furnace, hot water heater, fireplace, stove or any appliance at releases exhaust. It is important to clear around fire hydrants to prevent a delay incase of an emergency. There should bee a 3 foot clearing around the entire hydrant with a path to the hydrant from the roadway. Blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide to build up in your home causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Clear snow away from all appliance and heating system vents. Check the batteries in you carbon monoxide detector. If you detector does go off, all occupants should evacuate the building and call 911. Unlike smoke and fire, carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless gas. It takes specialized equipment to determine if there is a carbon monoxide in your home or business. |
